Mark Demsteader

It was the girl with the yellow dress (see below) that caught my interest of  the artist, Mark Demsteader.  He was born in 1963 in Manchester, where he also continues to work… I appreciate his combination of classic figure drawing and with the finish touch of contemporary surface, bold colour texture. There’s not much going on in the paintings, they are simple. All focus is on the girls poses and the mood. It feels dark and lonely. Although when you look closely, the girls face portraits are all so delicate and graceful – I get a new sense, the girls are in fact not as abandoned as my first impression…who knows?
